Battle for the Cup

In Perthshire, Scotland this past weekend, the Europeans dominated the Americans to retain the Ryder Cup.

Much closer to home, Lexington’s version of the Ryder Cup took place last Thursday at Golden Hills, and it couldn’t have been better.

“Food, fellowship, and fun on the golf course. The only thing missing was the bagpipes!” said Royce Lehman of North Lake Construction. “The annual Chamber Ryder Cup golf tournament was a great day and a great way to usher in the fall season!”

The event kicked off on Wednesday night with a dinner at Gibson Pond Park, where Chris Henson of Woodmen of the World grilled steaks as the evening’s sponsor.

Golfers arrived to a picturesque setting the next morning and enjoyed perfect conditions with greens that were soft and receptive following the recent rain.

The tournament’s 31 pairings were divided into two teams – the blue team and the red team. With a format similar to the professional’s version of the Ryder Cup, the blue team took on the role of the Europeans and won the event.

Cash prizes were awarded to the first and second-place teams from the blue team and to the red team’s first-place pairing. Mike White and Charles McMurray with JMC Enterprise took first place for blue, while Fred Maithis and Bucky Hammond with Comporium tied Paul Brown and Tim Evans with North Lake Construction for second place. Ed McDonnel and Sammy Freeman with ColaDaily.com finished first for the red team.

Chris Petty of Strathos Wealth Partners – “I really enjoyed sponsoring a hole at the Ryder Cup and having the opportunity to learn so much about Lexington businesses. The Ryder Cup gave me the opportunity to get my name and Strathos Wealth Partners out to the participants…it’s not who you know, it’s who knows you!”

Petty made a memorable impression with his company’s giveaway, handing out sleeves of golf balls, including Nike, Titleist and Callaway, as well as tees and divot tools.

Another popular spot was the GMM Insurance tent, where the infamous margaritas were a huge hit, as they always are at both Chamber golf tournaments.

Tripp Newsome with Newsome & Company gave out embroidered golf towels, which were also one of the day’s favorites.
